Fresh off the publication of his memoir, Shattered: A Son Picks Up the Pieces of His Father’s Rage, author and scholar Arthur Boers will speak on “The Perils and Promise in Penning Memoir: Grace-Filled and Faith-Filled Challenges.” Writing memoirs requires navigating truth-telling and fidelity to loved ones, breaking silence around family secrets while loving and respecting one’s forebearers, and truth-telling without score-settling. For those thinking of writing their own personal stories, or those curious about the challenges of writing the truth with love about our families, Arthur offers a wise and theological perspective.

About the Speaker

Rev. Dr. Arthur Boers is an Anglican priest and a Benedictine Oblate. He has pastored in urban, suburban, rural, and inner city settings in Ontario and the American Midwest, as well as taught at several seminaries. He has written a number of books including, The Way is Made by Walking: A Pilgrimage Along the Camino de Santiago, Never Call Them Jerks: Healthy Responses to Difficult Behavior, and Living into Focus: Choosing What Matters in an Age of Distractions.

Arthur loves to study and holds several academic degrees, including his favorite and most recent, an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle-Pacific University. The oldest son of Dutch immigrants, English is Arthur's second language. He has been married to Lorna McDougall for over four decades and they are the proud parents of two adults and grandparents to the incomparable Norah.
