Cultural historians—especially those immersed in the study of antiquity (e.g. Judge, Hurtado, Rowe)—have increasingly recognized the gospel's contribution to the development of the modern world. An aspect of this contribution that remains under-appreciated is how fundamentally the gospel prepared the way for the modern world's capacity for genuinely transformative invention. This lecture will examine the first gospel's profound contribution to the discourse of design, invention, and ultimately the promise of genuine transformation. It will conclude with suggestions of what we can do about it.

This lecture is part of our 2017 Summer Evening Public Lecture series.

Rikk Watts served as Regent College's Professor of New Testament from 1996-2016. He is currently a member of the faculty of theology at Alphacrucis College in Australia. Initially trained as an aeronautical engineer, Rikk worked for a number of years with IBM in large retail systems engineering while undertaking a degree in philosophy, art history, and sociology. In addition to Alphacrucis and Regent, Rikk has served as an instructor at Gordon-Conwell (Boston), Wycliffe Hall (Oxford), Latrobe University (Melbourne), and the Bible College of Victoria (Melbourne).

Dr. Watts will be teaching the class "The Gospel of Mark" from July 3–7, 2017 and "Jesus & the Mighty Deeds of Yahweh" from July 10–14, 2017 as part of our 2017 Summer Programs. Learn more at rgnt.net/summer.
