About the Lecture
Have you ever wondered how our foremothers of faith responded to controversial statements about women in Pauline literature? This lecture will introduce long-forgotten women who commented on Paul’s writings. Some felt compelled to preach in public or in writing and addressed the issue of women's silence head-on. Others countered simplistic readings of 1 Corinthians 14:34–35 and 1 Timothy 2:11–12 with a surprising array of biblical texts, as well as scriptural and historical examples of women speaking, confessing, witnessing, and even preaching. Join Old Testament scholar Dr. Marion Taylor and get to know five fascinating women: Lutheran pamphleteer Argula von Grumbach (1492–c.1563); Reformed church mother Katharina Schütz Zell (1497–1562); Catholic Abbess Caritas Pirckheimer (1467–1532), Reformed preacher, evangelist, and author Marie Dentière (1495–1561), and reform-minded Catholic Queen Marguerite de Navarre (1492–1549).
