Christ Centered or Spirit Centered? Why the Question Matters and Why the Answer Makes All the Difference

One of the critical questions for the church in our day is the dynamic between the Son and the Spirit within the Trinity, and what this means for the life and witness of the church. Some Christians seem to be “Jesus” Christians with little awareness of or reference to the Spirit. Others seem to be “Spirit” Christians with Jesus as a secondary player. Both are a problem. We need to ask for and embrace a Trinitarian faith that is Christ-centred and fully and deeply graced by the Spirit.
Gordon T. Smith is the President of Ambrose University in Calgary, Alberta as of August 2012. He continues to teach courses at Regent College topics such as spiritual practices, conversion, and discernment. He previously served as the Academic Dean at Regent. He is an ordained minister with the Christian and Missionary Alliance. His recent publications include Institutional Intelligence: How to Build an Effective Organization (IVP Academic, 2017), and Evangelical, Sacramental, and Pentecostal: Why the Church Should be All Three (IVP Academic, 2017).
