One of the highlights of Regent Summer Programs is our free Evening Public Lectures. This series always features a wide range of professors and topics, and this year is no exception. All lectures will be streamed online, so invite a friend and join us!
In this lecture, Sarah Williams reflects from a personal perspective on the challenges of life and learning in the post-modern academy. Using St Bernard of Clairvaux’s spiritual classic On the Steps of Humility and Pride (c1120) as an interpretative lens, she re-considers the spiritual practices that foster intimacy with God amidst the pressures and temptations of intellectual work in higher education. How can we love God with our minds as well as our hearts? And how can such love be expressed in ways that reflect the radical humility of Christ?
Sarah Williams is Research Professor in the History of Christianity at Regent College. She is a specialist in the field of nineteenth- and twentieth-century cultural history, with a particular interest in cultural understandings of gender, identity, and personhood.
