HIST 607

Models of Public Engagement

This course is available only to students enrolled in our Master of Arts program in Leadership, Theology, and Society.

This seminar-style course gives students an opportunity to think carefully about the relationship between Christian ethics and politics, Christian spirituality and public service, personal faith and civil society. Using case study method with a historical frame of reference, we will study key Christian figures and movements, focusing on the role of Christian ideas and practices in engaging critical social issues. We will explore how ideas of society, social change, political power, responsibility, and vocation have been deeply shaped by the legacy of Christian engagement. In so doing, the course raises probing questions about Christian identity, public witness, and missional engagement.
